Florida’s 6 percent tax cap on yacht purchases

The statutory cap, what it does not cover, and why a Fort Lauderdale closing still needs a tax professional.

Florida’s maximum tax on a yacht purchase is widely quoted and widely misunderstood. The cap is not a coupon, and it does not settle use tax, local discretionary surtax, or a later import. Closings that “just pay the six percent” without a written posture from counsel are how quiet deals become loud. We keep the broker, the CPA, and the documentation clerk on one timeline so the cap is applied to the transaction that actually occurred. If the vessel will leave for the Med in ninety days, that fact belongs in the file before anyone requests a decal.
